Investigations

From thought to publication.

Our role

Investigations are in-depth inquiries carried out by Tuzafrika into specific situations, held to the strictest methodological standard — a rigorous distinction between established facts, testimonies and allegations. Tuzafrika is a young institute: no original investigation has been published yet. This page sets out the rules we will hold ourselves to for the first one, rather than announcing a result that does not yet exist.

Method

The rules we hold ourselves to

  1. 1

Three levels of certainty, never conflated. An established fact (documented, corroborated) is always distinguished from a testimony (a person's reported experience) and from an allegation (an accusation not yet verified). The final text explicitly states which category each claim belongs to.

  2. 2

Corroboration by at least two independent sources for any fact presented as established, except where a single source is authoritative (an official document, a court ruling).

  3. 3

Right of reply. Any person or institution named in a serious allegation is contacted before publication; their response, or their silence, is reported.

  4. 4

Protection of witnesses. A person's identity may be protected where their safety is at stake; that choice is then explicitly disclosed to the reader, never hidden.

  5. 5

Transparency about limits. What could not be verified, a source that retracted, access that was denied: these limits are stated rather than passed over in silence.

In the meantime

What we have already published

While we prepare our first investigation, two research pieces already apply part of this methodological standard: a sourced analysis of the root causes of the Great Lakes conflicts, and a verified timeline of more than 80 events.
